1932, All-Union Philatelic Exhibition souvenir sheet, on carton paper, imperf, ungummed, one of the great rarities of Soviet philately. Given as a souvenir to invited guests of the exhibition. Only 500 printed. Michel catalog – €25,000

The unique souvenr sheet of four 1932 All Soviet Philatelic Exhibition in Moscow, souvenir sheet of four on thick card, with the unique three line personalized overprint “To the best shock worker of the All Russian Philatelic Society – President of the Moscow Philatelic Organization E.M. Nurkas”, issued without gum. While 25 souvenir sheets were overprinted with the two line “To the best shock worker of the All Russian Philatelic Society”, three were additionally personalized with a three line overprint. One was given to the notorious Genrikh Yagoda (head of the NKVD), and one each to the presidents of Moscow (Nurkas) and Leningrad Philatelic Organizations/Societies. The latter, as well as Yagoda were executed on Stalin’s orders, with only Mr. Nurkas (and his souvenir sheet) surviving. During the purges, Mr. Nurkas was imprisoned and traded the sheet with another inmate, a physician who miraculously survived Stalin’s Gulags and World War II. The sheet was sold on Cherrystone auction in 2008.

Price realized: $776,250.00

Air Post 1935 Moscow-San Francisco

Sigizmund Levanevsky stamp with commemorative red overprint for “Moscow – San Francisco flight via the North Pole”, August 1935. The surcharge inverted. Only two sheets (50 stamps) of the inverted surcharge were printed (40 with the regular overprinted, 10 with small “f”). The stamp was sold on Cherrystone auction in 2008.

Price realized: $166,750.00

The variety with small Cyrillic “f” in “San Francisco”, surcharge inverted, of course. Only two sheets (50 stamps) of the inverted surcharge were discovered. The small “f” occurs five times per sheet, which means that only 10 of this double error can exist. There are only recorded a total of six inverted small “f” varieties, of which two are contained in a unique combination block of four. A major Soviet and air post rarity, ex-Mikulski collection. The stamp was sold on Cherrystone auction in 2008.

Price realized: $718,750.00.

Russian Consular stamp (“Consular poltinnik”)

The consular tax stamp (Consular poltinnik) – a very rare 50-kopeck Russian stamp (1922), 50-75 specimens available (estimate). The stamp was sold on Cherrystone auction in 2008.

Price realized: $63,250.00.

250th Anniversary of Battle of Poltava

1959 unissued 250th Anniversary of Battle of Poltava. The stamp was removed from circulation few hours after the issue before Khrushchev’s visit to Sweden. Only 40 stamps are known.

Price Realized: $10,925.00

Reunification of Carpatho-Ukraine and Ukraine

1965 unissued 20th Anniversary of “Reunification of Carpatho-Ukraine and Ukraine”

Price Realized: $29,900.00

World Peace Cruise

The unissued 1964 “World Peace Cruise” stamp, intended for “Khrushchev’s Visit to Sweden” and printed on special ungummed Goznak paper. As Khrushchev was removed from power, the stamp was withdrawn and never issued. Only a few copies of this legendary stamp exist. The stamp was sold on Cherrystone auction in 2008.

Price realized: $28,750.00.

The famous “Limonka”

The Limonka is a soviet postage stamp from the first series “Gold Standard”, issued in 1925. It is a rare Russian stamp if in mint condition.

The main problem with this stamp arises with re-perforated stamps, made using its cheap perf.12 “brother”. The size of the margins is in that case an important indicator of foulplay.

Price realized: $15,000-20,000.

40th Anniversary of the Soviet Circus

1959 40th Anniversary of the Soviet Circus, 60k red and blue, prepared but never issued (the exact date of anniversary is uknown). The stamp was sold on Cherrystone auction in 2008.

Price Realized: $13,800.00
